MAKETAAN – Watermelon & Ginger Preserve


A traditional Cape delicacy — crisp chunks of preserved wild watermelon

With cheese:

— The perfect addition to a traditional cheese board,
or serve with Camembert, Brie, goat's
and cream cheese

Other uses:

— Delicious with steak, add to cold meat platters,
or dress desserts

Did you know that Maketaan is made from a wild watermelon that grows in the veld? If eaten fresh, it is extremely bitter. Early Cape settlers perfected the art of preserving this large white melon. We make it the old fashioned way — slowly, and with care to ensure it has a crisp texture and caramelized flavour.
